WebClient Services & OT-Enterprise Connect

Web Client Service:
Description: Web Client Service enables Windows-based programs to create, access, and modify Internet-based files. If this service is stopped, these functions will not be available. If this service is disabled, Enterprise Connect Services, which explicitly depends on it, will fail and documents will not open from Enterprise Connect.
Web Client Services should therefore always be in “Automatic” -> “Started” mode for Enterprise Connect to function properly and optimally.
Issue: Web Client in Stopping Mode in XP Machines Only

Resolution Steps:
IMPORTANT:  Follow the steps below exactly as they are spelled out, particularly steps 4 and 5.  One small misstep could severely compromise the user’s computer.

1. Start Task Manager (CTR +   alt + Delete) and click the “View” Tab; then select “Select Columns”.

2. Check PID (Process Identifier) box.  Hit OK.

3.Start Command Prompt (Start > Run) and type “CMD” and hit enter.  Then copy the command below in red, then right-click and paste it into the command window and press the enter key.

ttasklist /svc /fi "imagename eq svchost.exe".

4. In the list that appears, check the PID number for the SVCHOST.exe (WebClient appears under the “Services” column).  Take special note of the PID code displayed next to “WebClient.”  In the screenshot below, the PID number is displayed as “1100,” but this number will be different on every computer.  Again, take special note of this number, because you will use it in the next step.

5.Open the task manager again (Ctrl + Alt + Delete) and find the SVChost.exe process with the same PID noted in step 4 (there will be several SVChost processes, so be sure to select the appropriate one).  Then kill it by clicking the “End Process” button.

6.Next go to the Services page (right-click MyComputer > Manage > Services).
First under the “Actions” drop-down menu at the top of the page, hit “Refresh.”   Then browse to the “WebClient” Service under the “Name” column (the status should be blank).  Right-click this item and hit “Start” (or select the item and hit “Start” on the left-hand side of the page).
